A Few Parenting Tips For Toddlers

Most of us need parenting tips for toddlers. Many toddlers are at that age of wanting to be independent but they still need parental help. Toddlers will have tantrums no matter where they are at. It is a good idea to encourage your child to listen and cooperate with you. By following a few easy steps you will get a happier child and a happier you.

Parents should always let their children know they love them, toddlers enjoy a ton of attention, giving them kisses and hugs and play time with you will show them how much they are loved. The positive attention needs to be given more often than the negative attention. And rewarding them for the things that they do right will keep them wanting to do them.

Every child is unique, always accept your child for the child they are. Don't think your child will be like you because they won't, they have their own little personalities. Don't focus on your child's bad behavior because they may continue to be that way just to get attention. Keep your child challenged, such as if they finish a puzzle or game very fast that usually will mean it is to easy for them and they need a more difficult puzzle or game that will build their mind.

Your child will not be able to follow a long list of rules. The rules need to be short and simple. Safety should always be your priority, you can help your child follow the rules by not tempting them with things that are left out, they need to be put away.

Try not to raise your voice at your child, raising your voice will just upset your child and upset yourself. You should remember to use your please and thank you's when asking your child to do something just like you want them to do. A good suggestion to get your child to clean up is to turn it into a game, it makes it entertaining for them and they will want to do it.

When your child responds to you with the word no, do not get upset, just keep repeating what you want them to do and they will eventually do it. Pick your battles with your child, if they are doing something you prefer they didn't do but they are not harming themselves or anybody else just let them keep doing it. Toddlers love choices, for example you can pick out two different pairs of pants and ask them which pair they would like to wear. It makes your child feel independent making those little decisions.

Final parenting tip for toddlers is to keep with a schedule the best you can. Children love consistency and when that is changed it could mess up their whole day. If it is nap time and you need to run to the store you should either wait until your child wakes up or call a babysitter to come over and watch your child. The toddler age is known to be challenging but also a rewarding age, toddlers are learning their independence and it is fun to watch them grow-Amanda Pryse

How To Make Sure Your Kids Are Safe With Your Dog

How to make sure your kids are safe with your dog is a query many parents make especially if a new baby is being brought home to a home where a family dog already lives. Unfortunately the news is all too often giving reports of family dogs mauling or even killing a child. Here we will look at ways to make sure of the safety of your child with a dog.

Children just love animals, it's a fact, and most children are first introduced to animals through a family pet. As dogs are the number one choice for family pets this means most children will be introduced to interacting with animals through a dog.

The safety of your child should always be the first priority of any parent. If you feel that your child would not be safe around your dog then you really need to make some choices. This may be because your dog has bitten someone before or they may be over playful. If this is the case then carefully consider if having a dog in the home is the right choice. Your child must always come first and if this means rehoming your dog then this is a decision that must be made.

If your dog is well tempered and has no history of biting and you are confident in their manner then a home with children shared by a dog can be a very happy place.

The golden rule for kids with dogs is to always supervise. Never leave your dog alone with a child. In most reported cases where a dog has harmed a child the adult supervising has left them unattended, even for a few seconds. You just do not know what is happening if you are not there and if an incident does occur in your absence you will be unable to intervene.

When your child is very small or a baby it is very important to always be next to your dog. Dogs are very inquisitive animals and will want to smell your child and see what they are.

When bringing home a new baby it is a good idea to very slowly introduce the dog to the child. Place a blanket from the child's crib in the dogs bed at first. This allows the animal to smell the new smell. A dog's main sence is smell.

Once your dog has spent a night with the blanket and you bring baby home it is very important that you are in charge of the situation. Dogs need to have a leader and they will take their que from you if you are their leader.

Older children will want to play with the dog and again supervision should be constant. A dog at play can often bite inadvertently when excited, and allowing your dog to become overly exited should be avoided.

Never allow your child near a dog which is feeding. Dog's will guard their food source and a child should be kept separate from your pet when they are enjoying their meal.

Think about how you can separate your dog and child. Do you have a room the animal can be placed to allow separation. Perhaps a child gate can provide an area where the dog can be put. This helps also in showing your dog that you are the leader.

Overall, remember your child must come first in every situation. If at any time a dog snaps or bites a child then do not give that animal a second chance. The next time could lead to terrible consequences-

The Thirsty Crow

One hot day, a thirsty crow flew all over the fields looking for water. For a long time, she could not find any. She felt very weak, almost giving up hope.

Suddenly, she saw a water jug below her. She flew straight down to see if there was any water inside. Yes, she could see some water inside the jug!
The crow tried to push her head into the jug. Sadly, she found that the neck of the jug was too narrow. Then she tried to push the jug down for the water to flow out. She found that the jug was too heavy.

The crow thought hard for a while. Then looking around her, she saw some pebbles. She suddenly had a good idea. She started picking up the pebbles one by one, dropping each into the jug. As more and more pebbles filled the jug, the water level kept rising. Soon it was high enough for the crow to drink. Her plan had worked!

Newborn Checklist for Traveling

Parents of newborns find traveling with their little ones a major inconvenience and that is why they need a newborn checklist. This is not surprising, as a baby's stuff can be so overwhelming. Can you imagine how difficult it would be for parents like you to pack their baby's things, given the sheer number of clothes, diapers, bottles and wipes that newborns need? But there are times when traveling with a baby just cannot be avoided. You can minimize the chances of forgetting an important item by keeping a newborn checklist for traveling. Likewise, you can ensure a more comfortable travel for your little one if you bring the right pieces of travel gear.

Your essentials

But before packing your baby's things, secure your essentials first. Bring cash, or credit, debit and ATM cards- you don't want to get caught penniless during the trip. Don't forget your passports or if driving, your driver's license. The same goes for your health and travel insurance documents and airplane tickets. Keep your address or phone book, as well as hotel or car reservation numbers.

Baby supplies

Pack a lot of clothes as you don't want to be caught needing a pair or two on the road. Allot two to three outfits per day, plus an extra. Bring a sweater or jacket to warm your baby when you are going to a cooler climate.

How many diapers do you need to bring? In order to have enough during the entire travel, allocate a diaper for each hour that you'll be on the road. You could also bring more in case your flight gets delayed.

Bring disposable changing pads that you can put under your newborn during diaper changes. You can buy these at supermarkets and baby stores. Diaper rash can appear anytime during the trip so you need to have a small tube of diaper rash ointment.

Bring a few blankets as well as you'll find these handy when covering your baby or protecting your clothes from burps. Baby wipes not only help you clean baby bottoms but also clean the face, hands and even spills. You may opt for disposable bibs instead of carrying totally dirty ones. Also include in your newborn checklist for travel cloth diapers that can serve as burp clothes for cleaning spills.

Feeding

Hungry babies can add up to the inconvenience on the road. Imagine how difficult it would be to appease a hungry newborn while on a flight. So bring enough formula milk that would last through unexpected delays. If you are breastfeeding your infant, make sure you have enough snacks and bottled water.

Bring enough bottles to last during the trip. Don't forget too, the bottle brush and a travel size dish soap which you'll need in case you have to clean bottles on the road.

Miscellaneous

Bring several sealable bags that you can use in disposing of dirty diapers or holding soiled clothes. After changing baby's diapers, you may have difficulties finding a sink where you can clean your hands. Bringing a travel-sized hand sanitizer should keep your hands clean after diaper changes.

Bring medicines for fever and cold in case your baby suddenly experiences a rise in body temperature. If you are traveling by plane, make sure these medications are in your carry on or diaper bag. Be certain that the spoon or dropper for each medicine is also in the bag. A thermometer should also be brought so you will know his temperature in case your newborn gets sick.

Keep your little one groomed all the time by bring toiletries like brush, shampoo, soap and nail clippers.

Carrying your infant is easier if you have a sling or front carrier. You should find this handy if you are in crowded areas like airports. If you are traveling by car, don't forget the car seat and car seat pillow to support your baby's head during the entire trip. A collapsible stroller is also a necessity, something that can be stored in the overhead bin.

Tips

To avoid missing out on important items, start packing a few days before you hit the road. Cross out from the list the things you have packed. Pack your baby's outfits in separate bags to spare you from the hassle of hunting around for smaller items like socks.

Don't forget to bring your camera as well as battery charger and spare memory card. Your newborn checklist for traveling should also include age-appropriate toys like rattles, soft animals, plastic keys and soft animals-

How to raise health conscious kids ?

Gone are the days when mothers used to force feed their kids in a bid to see them plump and chubby.

Nowadays, healthy kids are just as important as smart kids. Time after time, studies have revealed that nutrition and exercise can uplift overall health while also improving academic performance. Today, Bangalore-based body transformation expert, Wanitha Ashok gives us a detailed low-down on sustainable and measurable health goals when it comes to raising health conscious kids.

Teach them sports skills: Introduction to various sports is the first step that any parent needs to instil in their kids. Kids sometimes talk about the sports that they would like to take up but they may not have the right skills for the same. Therefore, exploring various sports would be beneficial. After all, sports are skill based and work for strength, focus, agility, concentration and also double up as a good cardio workout for children.

Teach them persistence, creativity and importance of health: When it comes to children, the mode is always 'follow the leader', therefore to see the change the parents need to change themselves first. Therefore, a healthy lifestyle consisting of mindful eating habits and following a good exercise regime plays a very important role as the child seeing this from the young age will only believe in this and it becomes a part of his/her lifestyle. Persistence is again a reflected quality and children being keen observer, will soon learn it from a parent.

Exploring equals to empowering: Parents should inculcate the habit of individuality in their children and allow them to use their brains instead of constantly spoon feeding them. Getting them to explore and experiment will not only bring upon individuality, but also improves their creative mind. A simple rhyming poem construction, painting, drawing, craft, storytelling related to health are the some of the things that one can start with.

Right food for height and growth: The diet consisting of protein and calcium is essential for their bones and muscles. Additionally, do give them plenty of water, fiber, vitamins and minerals and good carbs, which are required for complete nourishment. Along with this, outdoor activities are recommended as it places a positive stress on the bone density and increases the bone mass. Cycling, basket ball and swimming are said to be good exercise options for height gain in children.

Right food to build immunity: They should be given a diet rich in Vitamin C, E and citrus fruits, which are known to boost immunity. Exercise is known to improve the immune system and imparts fewer chances of falling ill. And, it also helps children heal and recover faster in case of any kind of injury.

Eat smart as a family: Practice what you preach. Good eating habits apply to the entire family. And it's good to start early with the kids. If the parents have had an unhealthy lifestyle, then now is the time to correct their ways and start living healthy. The diet should consist of carbs, protein, healthy fats, vitamin and minerals at every meal.

Snacking options should be healthy choices like fresh veggies with healthy dips, yoghurt smoothies, fresh fruits, whole grain bread snacks etc. However, it is quite okay to binge moderately once in a way and the child should be educated about harm and ill effects of eating calorie rich sinful food on everyday basis.

Never use food as a reward: As children are smart and very soon they will use it as a tool to even do their homework. The rewards can be a field trip, buying a sports equipment, water sports etc. Show support through positive enforcement of right health habits. Encouraging words would help and connecting the good food habits with their health and energy would further add to motivation levels.

Fun exercises for children: The number one choice would be dance as its music based and children can relate to songs and further enjoy their workout. The other exercises would be family games using props like soft ball, ropes, deck of card and paper games. In the family games, the child should be made the leader, judge or decision maker to build qualities such as individuality, administration and leadership. Apart from this trekking, animal walking, wii fit games, relay etc would be the best way to squeeze in exercises.

Don't always nag about unhealthy foods: Don't nag, just casually educate the child about the importance of eating right and the side effects of unhealthy food. Dramatize the key points of unhealthy lifestyle as it will register in the child's mind. And to support further, do not stock the house with unhealthy food. Peer pressure can havoc your kids training, so it's good to talk to their friends too-healthmeup

Easy ways to get your kid to try new food stuffs

Getting your toddler to try different foods can be a challenge. Plus, bribing your picky eater can lead to unhealthy eating habits. Instead, try these ways:

Eat while hungry: A hungry kid is more likely to try different foods. So, avoid giving any snack before mealtimes and start your child's meal by introducing a new dish.

Try the two-bite rule: Convince your tot to at least take a bite of the food that is served, even if he/she doesn't finish it.

Have meals together: Most kids copy their parents and when they see their father or mother trying out a particular dish, they will be happy to try it too.-Times of India

The Only Child-Lucky Or Spoiled?

In the past, large families were commonplace with an average of 3 children being the common statistic. Having only one child was rare, and that child was assumed to be a spoiled, rotten brat. In recent years, due to improved birth control and the fact that many couples are waiting until they are older to have children, only children are becoming more common. This does not mean that there are a large percentage of single-child homes however. Many people still feel that having an only child is undesirable and that having at least two children is necessary for normal childhood development to occur. Although there are some disadvantages to having an only child, there are also some advantages to the situation.

Only children seem to do better in school than children from average-sized families. This could be due to several factors. Parents have more time to help an only child with their homework. With several children, parents may only have the time to quickly check the answers to make sure that they are correct.

Only children often have better language and communicative skills than their peers. This is due to the fact that as the child is growing up, he is spending much more time around adults than a child with several siblings. It is only natural that the child would pick up adult language patterns and vocabulary.

Only children are also more likely to attend college. This is due in part to higher scores in high school. It is also a result of parents of an only child having more money available to pay tuition. This is a combination of the lower costs of raising one child as well as the fact that many parents of only children are older and more financially established than their younger counterparts. With college costs today, families with more than one child may have difficulties sending any of them to college.

Only children also never have to suffer from sibling jealousy, while some children from average size families carry this hostility into adulthood. These only children also may enjoy a closer relationship to their parents than other children, as these youngsters tend to go on trips with their parents more often than their peers. Mothers of only children are also more likely to take the child along to run errands such as going to the grocery store, something that mothers with several youngsters may not consider to be an option.

There are certain areas that parents of only children need to be careful with. There is nothing wrong with showing your child that you love him. The problem that arises with only child is that the parent's love is all centered on him, especially if the child is the result of years of the parents attempting to have a baby. These parents should make sure that they keep outside interests so that your child will realize that he is not the center of the universe.

Only children also have more difficulty in social situations with their peers. Children with siblings grow up knowing how to interact with other children, while the only child spends most of his childhood with adults. Enrolling your child in a group daycare center or making play dates with other children when your child is young can help him learn to deal with his peers.

There is nothing wrong with parents having only one child. It is how these parents deal with the situation that can make a world of difference.-

How to Improve Your Parenting Skills

Raising a child is all about having good parenting skills and learning good parenting techniques. Without parenting skills, the duties of the average parent are reduced to simply struggling around with great difficulty. Of course, the realistic point of view of raising a child is that most parents enter their new role without a clue as to how to achieve their goals and are quickly looking for help.

So where does a parent go to learn good parenting skills? When all hope is lost, many parents find that they actually turn to their own parents for advice. Most parents end up raising their children in ways similar to how they were raised. While this aspect is often a sworn denial among teenage years, sung somewhat to the tune of "I will never be like you", the reality of raising a child often finds a different song of desperation is being sung in subsequent years.

When people are too proud to go to their parents for parenting advice, however, they often turn to other measures. Raising teenagers is typically one of the aspects of parenting that often drives people to drink, for one. Whether or not hitting the bottle is considered a significant or "good" parenting skill is still up for debate, but raising teenagers has been known to drive parents to some pretty unfortunate ends.

Through all of this desperation and despair, parenting skills are still possible. While a parent may have turned to drinking in lieu of asking his or her parents for advice, there are still possibilities for getting the skills necessary to overcome many problems. Raising a teenager is never easy. Many parents prefer almost any other stage in their child's life to teenage parenting, but no stage of raising a child is particularly without its pitfalls.

Parenting skills often can be found by taking a parenting course. Often dubbed as the "land of the lost", counseling for raising a child is actually a very popular course among parents of teenagers. With the reality of raising a teen heavy on the hearts of most of the parents at the parenting course, there is room to grieve and probably share a stiff drink later in the evening. In all seriousness, this network of support is often very helpful to achieving the ultimate goal of learning parenting skills that will help in the raising of a well-adjusted teenager.

With a certificate of success from a such a course in one hand and the phone numbers of other parents of teens in the other, the drive home to teenage children may finally be a walk that some parents feel they can take with more confidence.

Of course, raising a teenager is known for various curve balls and unexpected situations, but with some parenting skills and with a network of support from other parents of teens, it is possible to learn to deal with these situations with a greater sense of control.

Finding parenting skills to cope with situations involving teen children is the end goal of the parent. There is no age limit, in fact, that refers to when a parent stops being a parent, so the life of a parent will seem like an eternity. Raising a teen requires planning and parenting skills, making it one of the most demanding occupations on the planet today-Mike Selvon
